Choosing Godparents

A godparent serves a special role for the one to be baptized, whether it be a child or an adult. Godparents are to represent the Catholic Christian community, the Church. They are to assist in the preparation of adult candidates for baptism and to be supportive of them afterwards. When it comes to infant baptism, godparents are to assist the child’s parents in raising their child in the Catholic faith, so that the child may profess it and life it as an adult. Choosing godparents should be done carefully and prayerfully.

When choosing godparents the following should be kept in mind:

• They should be mature enough to undertake the responsibility.
• They should have received the three sacraments of initiation; Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
• One godparent must be a member of the Catholic Church, canonically free to carry out the office. A baptized and believing Christian from a separated ecclesial community may act as a godparent or Christian witness along with a Catholic godparent, at the request of the parents.
